Cultivation Department
Led by David Macklin Jr. and supported by Will Hayden, the Cultivation Department operates across indoor and outdoor environments, managing production at scale under multiple licensed tiers.
Outdoor cultivation
Outdoor cultivation is operated under a Tier 5 license, utilizing approximately 19,000 square feet of active canopy during the summer season. The outdoor program is built around disciplined crop steering, strict integrated pest management (IPM), and intensive canopy control. IPM strategies emphasize biological controls, including the use of beneficial insects to work cohesively with the crop. Canopy management is reinforced through three layers of horizontal trellis netting combined with vertical trellis support, providing structural protection against New England’s highly variable summer conditions, including thunderstorms, hail events, and microbursts.
Indoor cultivation
Indoor cultivation is operated under a Tier 3 license, with approximately 1,100 square feet of active canopy currently in production within a mixed-light, state-of-the-art greenhouse. This system intentionally harnesses natural sunlight while supplementing with artificial lighting as required, particularly during the winter months when solar intensity is reduced. The cultivation team believes that even in low-light seasons, sunlight contributes to unique cultivar expression that cannot be fully replicated under artificial lighting alone, delivering the benefits of both controlled indoor systems and natural environmental inputs.
Over the past four years, the cultivation team has focused on refining and locking in strict standard operating procedures (SOPs) covering crop steering, environmental management, canopy architecture, IPM, and harvest execution. With these systems now proven at scale, the department is positioned to responsibly expand further into its available tier allotments while maintaining consistency, quality, and compliance.
